Using a handheld cellphone behind the wheel is becoming more taboo every day. In fact, according to the Governor’s Highway Safety Administration, fourteen states have laws in place that ban hand held cell phone use completely. Thirty eight states have laws that ban cell phone use by novice drivers. Forty four states have laws banning texting while driving.

Simultaneously, the technology allowing you to go hands-free continues to improve. Many Volkswagens now come equipped with full Bluetooth integration capabilities, so we’ve got your quick and easy six step guide to get you started.

  1. Turn your vehicle on. This activates the Bluetooth discovery mode which lasts for three minutes.
  2. Make sure your phone has its Bluetooth enabled.
  3. Open the Bluetooth menu on your phone. Search for “new devices.” Then select “VW Phone.”
  4. You will get a connection request on the multi-function display. Press the “OK” button on your steering wheel.
  5. The multi-function display will then show a six digit pin number. Make sure the same number is displaying on your phone.
  6. If both pin numbers are the same, press “pair” on your phone within 30 seconds. (note: some phones may require you to enter a pin number of 0000 to be paired)

Once you have integrated Bluetooth, some phones will ask will ask if you want to set up an automatic connection. Doing this will prevent you from having to repeat the above steps every time you want to go hands free in your Volkswagen.
